This is a "competition grade" carving, which took a 3rd place ribbon at the 10th Annual Woodbee Carving Competition held in Iron Mountain, MI. A "competition grade" carving has a considerable amount of time and detail placed into the carving. All my carvings are anatomically correct and have a high amount of detail placed into them; competition pieces just go a step beyond the typical carvings that I do. With this piece I tried something different for one of my competition pieces and that is that I unleashed my artistic license. By this I mean that I tried to give the illusion of the Walleye chasing minnow which where carved into the Apple Wood branch. The carved in minnows are painted with transparent iridescent paints trying to give that “flash” that you see when minnows swim by. I carved the other ends of the Apple Wood branch to depict driftwood typical of an underwater habitat. The base is Butternut Wood with the illusion of sand and rocks carved into it. The judges were looking for more realistic habitat instead of an artistic/impressionistic sculpted base. I am very please with the end result and feel that I gave the illusion I was trying to achieve. This piece is currently available for purchase in the online Store.
